Hi I also changed my diet, no red meat nearly no diary and that's why I'm thinking of not going back on meds as I say I feel great...
I was diagnosed six and a half years ago and started taking tecfidera within 6 monthes. I took it for almost a year and experienced several strong negative side effects (severe abdominal pain/cramping, severe flushing, feeling very awful). I did a lot of research. I changed my diet. I have been medication-free for five years and feel great. I do still have an occasional symptom, but I feel so much better than before. I realize that there may come a time when I have to change my plan, but for now, I will keep focusing on the foods that I eat and how I take care of myself.
I got really frustrated with the MS meds which had been prescribed to me. I didn't have the right DMD for my MS and the meds I took made me feel overly tired and had few upsides so I quit all DMTs for like 6 mnths to a year. I felt great at first but started to slip after the start. Now I think stopping all DMDs was a huge mistake and I would've been far better telling my neuro I felt the DMDs I had been on weren't the right ones for me and kept trying them until I found the right one for me. I gave the DMD route one last try and found one that worked for me, Rituximab. I know this one may not be right for you (I mean it's a treatment for MS and all so it's a professionals SWAG or scientific wild a$$ guess that worked for me) Look, I know the light at the end of the tunnel has been a train and it's hard to muster the will but please keep looking for your DMD.
I don't think you can really come off a medication and assess how you are feeling as a comparison of the protection it is giving your body. You might feel better temporarily off of a med but DMT's affect your body long term so you won't notice the effect of being off of it until several years down the road when you have disease progression.
I stopped all meds in 2008 when I had to go on disability and after bad side effects. In 2014, I went into a beautiful remission (after worsening). I am still in that remission. As of the end of August 2023, I celebrated the 9th anniversary of my beautiful remission, with most of my symptoms now gone or manageable with lifestyle changes.
