My doctors term this phenomenon as "phantom smells." These are common when MS impacts your sense of smell.
Like with many MS problems, there's no real treatment that I know of if MS impacts your sense of smell. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!)
FWIW, my phantom smells are typically like a pungent Orchid smell. (Though once I got a -- yuck! -- phantom smell of vomit!)
Also, there are tests which can be done to put a numerical scale to how much MS has impacted your sense of smell.
Yes, it could be what is known as phantom smells. I have a history of seizures so these phantom smells are because of recurring seizures in my brain. The anticonvulsant meds keep it at bay and nothing manifests outwardly, but I can smell the activity.
Now, please let it be known that serious sinus infections can also cause these phantom smells. Also, allergies can also create this setting with the phantom smells. Uti's can also be a possible culprit.

I get the smell of burning fire wood or the taste of bacon. It's my sign that a migraine is coming. I also get the halo's around lights.
It was cigarette smells for me. Like a dirty ashtray. It only seemed to happen right before bed... so weird. Sorry that's happening to you too.

This made me chuckle! Thanks for your info! Mine lately has been a weird dog smell, but I do have a new puppy so maybe it really is the dog! Lol
