I've been getting grief from my doctors because I take two Vicodin (actually Norco which I think is a bit less toxic) per day for MS and back pain. I have chronic pain and before my prescription I was self medicating with 8 or more Tylenol or Ibuprophin per day as well as alcohol and pot. I don't blame my doctors. There have been ridiculous new laws passed that make it much harder for people to get pain medicine and put a lot of pressure on doctors to not prescribe it, regardless of the… read more
The state medical examiners boards seem to really have their finger on the pulse of real problems for chronically ill patients. Extreme sarcasm… The arrogance of these medical boards to sit on high and threaten some of the best doctors in the world with fines, license revokation and prison makes me sick figuratively and mentally. There is a major factor that is left out of public knowlege with regards to perscription limitations, is that black market drug sales are included in the statistics for the “opiod crisis’ in America. So this hysteria is fabricated by doctors on a board with no knowlege of patients who have been seeing the same Dr for decades is total crap. The medical examiner board officer I spoke with advised me to write the state a letter. My response was, what if we all sued your ass. That did not sit well. This could be the only real path to right this terrible wrong. The lawyers are the only winners of class action suits, but this might set precedent that could change law. But thanks to their negligence and dishonesty in statistical data, here is what is happening. I will bet you a year’s salary that if these competent doctors on these boards had to endure a month of real pain they would seek another solution.
This pushes people in one of 3 directions. 1- Inaffective pain management, where a Dr. Is there to fill scripts for people in pain that really don’t even scratch the surface on it because it’s not enough, and junkies that got caught pill shopping and their only pain is addiction. 2-black market drugs that may or may not be what you need, heroin, fentanyl, or worse and that crap is really killing people. Then there is the unthinkable thoughts to end it all. Please, nobody choose door #3.
No unseen, unknown Dr should dictate what is best for a patient that has worked with their Dr. Sometimes for decades on a regimine that works after much trial and error. No unkown Dr should be able to tell anyone that their dr is giving them too much medication. Natural meds, that grow in the woods should not be seen as taboo. Just the fact that since this garbage has started the opioid crisis has gotten worse and suicide rates are increasing is blood on these obnoxious, pompus dill weeds that consider themselves medical experts.
Yeah im double wammied, im a recovering addict/drunk with RRMS. Almost 58 y/o tsking ibuprofen once in a while. I let the pain mansgement guy put needles full of steroids in me. Other than that it seems like the more i go workout, the better i feel. Not a huge fan of big pharma
I agree. There are people with true pain. Have they taken away caner pain meds? If a person has pain from MS, the person should be able to have something to help. 30 years ago I was told there was no pain with MS. Glad my doctor understands now.
This is so true. I haven't battled addiction from prescription drugs or alcohol, but I have close family who have. I'm trying to get a Neuro Immunologist here in OKC, after recently moving here. But the wait time is too long, 6-8 mo and meanwhile I am struggling but no relief. I am understanding more and more why people look to illegal drugs because I am so close to that.
@A MyMSTeam Member, First, I'm sorry. Second, your case is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about. And I've heard so many stories like yours since the "Opioid Crisis" became the latest crisis for the US media to become hysterical about. I'm virtually certain that taking that many Advil is far worse than say 2 Vicodin and chances are the 2 Vicodin might work much better. Just to be clear, I recognize that there was and still is a problem with people abusing pain medicine. But most of the real abuse is Oxycontin. You can't get high off of Vicodin. And again to be clear my point isn't that we don't need to do something about this abuse but that the draconian measures that have been instituted are going to make things worse not better. People end up taking far too much over the counter pain medicine which can be very harmful to your liver. Or even worse, as I did, they end up self medicating with alcohol or illegal drugs. Controlling prescription pain medicine is very easy. All you need is a good doctor who can read a friggin calendar!!! If the patient requests a refill too early the doctor just waits to prescribe it. Done. Problem solved.
