I have silent reflux. My throat is inflamed and I am constantly trying to clear it, to no avail.

This is a common MS symptom that can occur when lesions affect the areas of the brain that coordinate respiratory muscle function and swallowing. These lesions can make coughing less effective and create sensations of excess mucus or phlegm in your throat, even when you have difficulty clearing it.

Many MyMSTeam members share similar experiences, with some describing difficulty producing an effective cough or feeling like they're constantly clearing their throat without much success. There are several management options to consider:

1. Consult with a speech and language pathologist who can help strengthen your swallowing muscles and provide exercises to improve coordination.

2. Consider using medications that thin mucus to make it easier to clear - but always check with your healthcare provider before starting any new medications, as they may interact with other MS treatments.

3. If you're experiencing persistent symptoms or difficulty breathing, contact your doctor immediately. They may recommend specific forms of physiotherapy focused on strengthening chest muscles or suggest using devices to help train your cough strength.
