Does anyone else with MS experience severe nausea, and what helps when Zofran isn't working?

Yes, many people with MS experience nausea. As many as 10 percent of people with MS report dealing with this symptom. A MyMSTeam member shared: "I have been going through severe nausea since this December."

Nausea in MS can be caused by several factors:

* Dizziness and vertigo from MS lesions affecting the brainstem or inner ear
* Vision problems like rapid eye movement or double vision
* Digestive issues (dyspepsia) from MS itself or MS medications
* Side effects from disease-modifying therapies like dimethyl fumarate, ocrelizumab, or teriflunomide
* Other MS medications including certain antidepressants

Since Zofran isn't helping, here are other options to discuss with your doctor:

Motion sickness medications like meclizine or dimenhydrinate are available over the counter, though they can cause tiredness.

Vestibular rehabilitation with a specially trained physical therapist may help if your nausea is related to dizziness or vertigo.

Home remedies that some people find helpful:
* Ginger (tea, gummies, or supplements)
* Peppermint candies or tea
* Staying well-hydrated
* Acupressure wrist bands
* Deep breathing exercises into your diaphragm

If your nausea might be medication-related, your neurologist may consider adjusting your MS treatment plan. It's important to work with your healthcare team to identify the cause and find the right solution for you.
