What does spasticity in the neck feel like?
Neck spasticity in MS can feel different for each person, but many describe similar sensations. A MyMSTeam member described developing "what felt like a stiff neck" with pain from the back of the ear to the back of the head when turning right. Lifting the head off the pillow felt particularly difficult.
Others experience it as:
- Constant stiffness that doesn't improve with typical remedies like heating pads or massage
- Muscles that feel like they're pulsating in the neck and shoulders
- Severe pain that extends from the neck into the shoulder blades
- Stiffness accompanied by headaches
One member described the sensation as feeling "wrapped in 4-inch-wide adhesive tape," highlighting how restrictive it can feel.
Spasticity tends to worsen when you're still (like during sleep) and in cold weather. This is why many people notice their neck feels particularly stiff in the morning after being motionless all night.
If you're experiencing new or persistent neck stiffness, it's important to talk with your healthcare provider. They can help determine if it's MS-related spasticity and discuss treatment options that may provide relief.
