Absolutely, and you're far from alone in this. Neck, shoulder, and cervical spine pain are very common experiences for people living with MS. More than half of people with MS report musculoskeletal pain, and neck pain is among the most frequently mentioned.
A MyMSTeam member shared: "I get severe pain in the back of my neck and my shoulder blades." Another described waking up with "horrible stiff shoulders and neck," saying it felt like the muscles in their back were pulsating. There are a few MS-related reasons this kind of pain can occur:
- Spasticity – MS can cause muscle spasms that make the neck and shoulder muscles unusually tight or stiff
- Lhermitte's Sign – Nerve damage in the cervical (neck) area can cause a shock-like sensation that shoots down the spine when the neck moves
- Reduced mobility – MS can make staying active harder, which leads to inactivity-related stiffness and pain
- Osteoarthritis – A comorbidity sometimes seen in people with MS that can cause neck stiffness and aching The good news is there are several ways to manage this kind of pain. It's worth talking to your neurologist, who may suggest:
- Anti-inflammatory medications to reduce inflammation
- Muscle relaxants for stiffness
- Physical or occupational therapy with tailored exercises
- Stretching or water aerobics for gentle mobility support
- Acupuncture or biofeedback as alternative options
Always check with your care team before trying anything new, especially since what works for one person may not work for another.
