I was officially diagnosed yesterday. My doctor discussed Tecfidera and Gilenya. Can anyone share their experiences with one or both of the medications? Thank you.
I was on a few different type shots and now am on Gilenya and I have not had any bad side effects. And my last mri showed very little difference in spots and there had always been more before. The drug company pays my co=pay that can be pretty high so talk to them about that. It is being wonderful to me.
I've been on a number of different medications over the years (Copaxone 12 years, Tysabri 17 mths, Avonex 3 mths-not a good rxn to this one, & Aubagio - 4 mths - not a good rxn to this one either). I started Tecfidera last summer (2014) and it is going well. Side effects have been manageable. My friend started on Gilenya about the same time and seems to like it although they had to reduce her to every other day taking the meds as her immune system was getting too low. I would just read over the side effects carefully and work with your doctor to find the best fit for you. Good luck!
I am currently on Tecfidera and having problems with fatigue, but my neuro can't say it's from the Tec or just the MS. I was on Gilenya for 1 year and it damaged my optic nerve in my left eye. My eye doc took pics and saw the damage and said she wanted me off Gilenya immediately. My neuro agreed when he saw the test results. There have also been heart related issues that have come up with Gilenya. But back to Tecfidera, be sure to have your neuro discuss the JC Virus and PML with you. This is newly discovered side effect of Tecfidera. Good luck with what ever you decide on. @A MyMSTeam Member
If you are not on Medicare the drug companies will often cover the prescription cost either fully or with a minimal copayment of $10. By law they can not offer this program to people on Medicare. Be sure to ask. The people at the drug companies are helpful.
@A MyMSTeam Member , thank you for sharing. I will have a lot of information for my next appointment. I will take notes from the feedback here. I have had problems with depression most of my life. I definitely don't need anything that will increase the depression. I'm also concerned about the cost of medication. I opened my own business prior to things getting bad. Now, I question my ability to work.....but can't afford not to. Feels like a vicious cycle. Sorry for the rambling!
