I had chicken pox as a child. My current neuro (who I don't like, but that's besides the point :) ) wants to switch me from copaxone to Tecfidera or Gilenya. However before going on immunosuppressants, I guess he wants to make sure that I don't get chicken pox. Now my blood work is showing a mid range immunity, but not high range like they would like to see before giving immunosuppressants.

I am worried about live vaccines and having attacks right after (I am just barely recovering from a long… read more

Hi @A MyMSTeam Member - I got checked at other labs and they all showed good immunity to chicken pox, so I dropped the doctor that wanted me to get it. I went to see another guy and he said that even if my chicken pox immunity was low with Tecfidera it is not a problem. Now, I am in the process to start Rituxan as apparently I need to hit the disease harder than what the oral meds offer. Let me know what happens with you, but I would strongly suggest going to other doctors (like your family doc) to check the blood again. I checked it 4 times. It looks like I do indeed have immunity to chicken pox.

My neuro told me to NEVER get a live virus vaccine. I ask about the Shingles vaccine and he said NO. I have had chicken pox so that is why I ask about the Shingles vaccine. I get the flu shot (dead virus) but he said to never take the flu nasal mist because it is a live virus.

I am going to go ahead and get the vaccination. I will be the guinea pig. That way if this happens to someone else and they are having a hard time, I can tell them how it turned out for me. So now I have to do a cleanse to get the Aubagio out of my system so I can get it. I will be off MS therapy for a month and half with all of this so I wonder how well I am going to do. I really want to go on Gilenya with all the good things I have heard, plus I don't like the thought of the gastro probs with Tecfidera. I also @A MyMSTeam Member will be interested in seeing the results. Wish me luck guys. I will let you know in a week after my cleanse is done and I have the vaccination. Like I said it would be good if we had answers for others that have to do this also!

Hi. Please do another blood test for chicken pox immunity just to see. I heard good things about Gilenya. I cannot do Tysabri because of JC+ antibodies (very high) but I heard people do really well on Tysabri too. Best of luck to you. Yes, Rituxan is off label for MS. It is not FDA approved for MS and will not be in the future.
