I tried Copaxone right out of the gate & I had a significant relapse while on it... developed new lesion on my spine, with all the lovely new symptoms that go with it. My new neurologist switched me to Tysabri, a monthly infusion. She explained that copaxone is the drug most people start out on because it's been around awhile and has few side-effects, other than the whole 'bee-sting' feeling, but she then told me that copaxone is only 30% efficacious, while Tysabri is 80% efficacious- but carries higher risk of a potentially lethal side-effect, PML (progressive multifocal leukocytosis). From what I understand everyone's immune system is differen and, thus, will respond differently in each person. I work with a woman who's been on copaxone for almost 20 yrs without any relapses... go figure. It's a bizarre disease!
The only side effects I had was some soreness, itchiness at injection site, and some hardness of the skin. I found the best places for injection were abdomen, thigh and hip. Hated doing it in the arm!
I stated Wednesday and the only issues I've had are burning, redness, and a welt that feels like a bruise. The burning and redness went away pretty quickly but the welt stayed awhile so make sure you rotate!
I'm awaiting insurance approval to start it - thanks for asking and answering my questions about it!
Thanks for all the help guys! I've done two shots and minimal bumps afterward. I've done the. Hot pack prior and cold after. @A MyMSTeam Member I'm a nurse and we are taught not to massage a sub q injection so that could be the cause of your bruising. I thank you guys for all your help!!
