Calf cramps and spasms are a common form of spasticity in MS, and they can be severe enough to drop you to the ground. The good news is there are several treatment options available.
Immediate Relief Strategies:
When a cramp hits, try to stay as still as possible until it passes. Applying heat, like sitting on a heating pad, can help soothe the muscle. Some people find relief with hot baths or alternating between heat and ice packs.
Medical Treatments:
Talk to your neurologist about medication options. Botox injections can be very effective for calf spasms - they work by relaxing the muscle so it doesn't cramp up. Other medications commonly used for MS-related spasticity and pain include gabapentin and pregabalin.
Long-Term Management:
Regular stretching exercises and physical therapy can help reduce the frequency and severity of cramps. A physical therapist can create a tailored exercise plan for your specific needs.
Keep in mind that spasticity often gets worse in cold weather, so extra precautions during temperature drops may help.
