Why do you have trouble sleeping with MS?
Sleep disturbances are very common with MS, affecting about 60 percent of people with the condition. There are several reasons why you might be struggling to get good rest.
MS-related symptoms that can disrupt sleep include:
* Muscle spasms that wake you up during the night
* Neuropathic pain
* Frequent urination (nocturia)
* Night sweats and temperature regulation issues
Researchers believe that lesions caused by MS attacks on the brain or spinal cord may contribute to these sleep problems. The brain stem, which can be affected by MS, is responsible for keeping airways open and maintaining breathing during sleep.
Additionally, nearly half of people with MS experience depression, which has a close connection to both fatigue and sleep disturbances. Some MS medications can also cause sleep problems as a side effect.
The good news is that there are many strategies and treatments available to help improve your sleep. Talk with your neurologist or healthcare provider about your specific sleep issues so they can work with you to find solutions tailored to your needs.
