Eye spasms and related vision issues are a well-known part of living with MS. They can range from mildly annoying to significantly disruptive β and you're definitely not alone in dealing with them.
Here are some common eye-related symptoms that can occur with MS:
- Eye spasms or twitching β involuntary muscle movements around or in the eye
- Nystagmus β sometimes called "dancing eyes," where the eyes move uncontrollably side to side or up and down
- Optic neuritis β inflammation of the optic nerve, which can cause pain (especially with eye movement), blurred vision, or even temporary vision loss
- Double vision (diplopia) β caused by nerve damage affecting the muscles that control eye movement
- Floaters β spots or shapes drifting across your vision
- Light sensitivity β bright lights can feel painful or overwhelming A MyMSTeam member described their experience as, "It's like living in a black-and-white TV show. My eye also twitches like crazy." Another shared that their vision felt like "two eyes that aren't working together β like a cartoon or drawing."
It's really important to report any new or worsening eye symptoms to your neurologist and eye doctor, even if they seem minor. These symptoms can be a sign of MS activity or progression, and early evaluation helps your care team figure out the best path forward for you.
